The bauta stones by Holms Farm in Stenungsund

Ancient monuments in South Bohuslän

The South Bohuslän is an area of cultural heritage, where our forbearers have lived and worked for thousands of years. All around our three towns you’ll find many ancient monuments and cultural heritage sites. Below is a list of sights for when you go on excursions to discover the South Bohuslän area.

Ancient monuments in Stenungsund

GRÖSSBY – PRÄSTGÄRDE
The area around Prästgärde is old cultural heritage country. Here you will find the ruins of the old church and churchyard of Ucklum, the old village road 'Grössbygata', several burial sites from the Iron Age and a stone circle. From the south on road 650, drive past Ucklum village and church. After about 2 km – take the road on your right. At the crossing there is a sign saying  ”Bilskrotning” and a tourist attraction sign. Follow this road, first keeping to the right and then to the left at the forks in the road. After about 1.5 km you’ll find a car park.

GRAVE FIELD – JORDHAMMAR
Drive through Stenungsund heading north. Pass Borealis and Akzo Nobel. About 200 metres after the viaduct, turn left into a small road. The grave fields are situated about 50 metres to the south.

THE BAUTA STONES BY HOLMS FARM
From the south, travel along Göteborgsvägen through Stenungsund. Turn right towards Borealis (the polythene factory). After Borealis, turn left by sign for Gategård. Then road on the right. After about 200 metres you’ll see the stones on a sloping field. Car park is not available. See picture above!

Ancient monuments on Tjörn

PILANE GRAVE FIELD
Between two mountain ridges in the north western part of Tjörn is one of Sweden’s largest and most famous grave fields. In total, there are more than 100 mounds, stone formations, stone circles and raised stones from the Middle Iron Age. Settlements from the Stone Age prove that humans have lived here long before the grave field was built. Drive towards Kyrkesund, turn left towards Hällene. Continue for about 1 kilometre to reach the car park.

THE ROCK-CARVINGS AT BASTERÖD
On Tjörn there are several hundred rock-carvings from the Bronze Age, about 1500 - 300 BC. They can be difficult for the layman to find. This, however, doesn't apply to the rock-carving at Basteröd, which is on the left hand side of the road between Klövedal's church and Kyrkesund, right by the turnoff for Hällene. There is a car park by Pilane grave field. On the rock are 15 ships with curved bows and sterns, and lines indicating the crew, some of which are bent into a hook-like shape. This has been interpreted as pictures of people blowing curved horns.

THE BRONZE AGE CAIRN ON VETTEBERGET
The most magnificent monuments of the Bronze Age are the cairns. Tjörn has just over a hundred of these, usually prominently positioned on the crest of a mountain. On the highest point of the island, 166 metres above the sea, is the largest and most impressive of them all. Turn in by Aröd. If you're driving along the main road towards Bleket, turn left onto a small country road (careful!) right opposite the turn-off for Skärhamn. Follow the country road to a small car park.

THE DOLMEN AT STYRDALEN
Stone Age grave from about 2,500 BC. The dolmen is situated right next to the road between Valla church and Furusäter. No car park.

Ancient monuments on Orust

HAGA DOLMEN - the most famous ancient monument in Bohuslän! It is around 6,000 years old, similar in age to the pyramids of Egypt. In the area are also settlements, stone chamber graves, cairns from the Bronze Age and grave fields. The car park is signposted from the new road between Varekil and Ellös. 300 metres from the car park to the dolmen.

THE HOGA STONE
Rune stone with 22 runes that are at least 1,000 years old. The car park is signposted both from the road between Varekil and Vräland, and from the road between Vräland and Hårleby. From the car park the distance to the rune stone is 150 metres. There is also a grave field and stone circles from the Iron Age.

LEBY PASSAGE GRAVE
One of Bohuslän’s biggest and best preserved passage graves. The car park is signposted from the road between Tegneby and Nösund at the turnoff for Leby. After about 500 metres you'll find a car park. Follow the footpath north across the field and then east along the fence for about 200 metres.

HUSEBY ANCIENT CASTLE
Collapsed stone walls now bear witness of the size of the castle. From the top you get a breathtaking view of Morlanda and the archipelago. Turn in from the new trunk road just before Ellös and drive towards Hälleviksstrand. After about 200 metres, there is a sign for the car park of the ancient castle. By the car park are information boards about the strange archaeological dig at Huseby Klev in the 1990’s.

BRATTÅS DOLMENS
By the road between Henån and Ellös, is a tourist attraction sign for 'Dösar' and immediately after the exit is a sign-posted car park on the right. From there, walk straight through the farm, heading west and up a hill, about 300 metres. The dolmens are at the top of the hill.

LUNDEN’S PASSAGE GRAVE
By the road Tegneby church - Nösund, follow the sign saying ‘gånggrift’ along the local road to Rålanda. There is a car park about 100 metres further on. The passage grave is in a north-easterly direction about 300 metres from the car park.
